Probably many of us did not know it. Even I have no idea this was happening between Walgreens and Express Scripts until Walgreens decided it needs everybody’s support to have themselves still be part of Express Scripts network.
Walgreens has been negotiating with Express Scripts for the past year for a new to continue as part of its pharmacy provider network. So far negotiations were unsuccessful and the contract expired late last year.
This resulted in Walgreens’ pharmacies nationwide not being part of Express Scripts’ pharmacy provider network as well as those Duane Reade pharmacies in the New York City area.
How will this affect us consumers who buy medicines? For one thing, patients covered by an Express Scripts plan now find themselves not only having to change their pharmacists, but many are having to drive farther to get prescriptions filled at pharmacies with less convenient hours for their hectic schedules.
Considering that Walgreens offers more 24 hour and drive thru pharmacies than any other pharmacy in the country, this is a mighty big inconvenience don’t you think?
If you feel you are upset with this situation, help Walgreens by contacting your local media and voice your dissatisfaction. Or you can use the power of social networking and spread the word to your friends. Just imagine the cost that patients get to save when they are a member of the Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens.
