One of the great things about the Internet is the ability to move around different sites and knowledge sources with ease. We all use search engines, but as the web gets more integrated, people are more and more developing technologies that help you find the information you need without having to leave your page.
RSS feeds are the root of this technology (RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication) and of course, this blog has RSS feeds, allowing you to read our content from all sorts of systems like Google Reader to your iPhone.
An example of how this raw technology can be made simple is in the form of “widgets” small snippets of code that you can use on your site which bring in other people’s active content. Here is one from a http://widgets.paddypower.com which – with just a few clicks – can be tailored into a live news and information center – in this case for the world cup soccer tournament coming up in South Africa in July.
